VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB/Gray News) – A UPS driver who saved a woman’s life while on his route 10 months ago is continuing to support her and her family as she now battles lung cancer.
Raheem Cooper was on his daily route in a neighborhood on Aug. 12 when he saw 78-year-old Marie Coble passed out in her driveway. He jumped into action, calling 911 and getting out of his truck to help her.
Coble had taken a fall, which left her with brain damage. She was taken to the hospital, where she underwent numerous surgeries.
Doctors said that Cooper’s actions helped save her life.
Cooper had left his information with Coble’s family and stayed in touch, getting updates about Coble’s condition. He even went to visit Coble in the hospital weekly and brought her favorite treat: Twinkies.
Now Cooper is supporting the family again as Coble battles Stage 4 lung cancer.
“It was pretty traumatic because I thought she was recovering pretty well, so it was just a shocker at first,” Cooper said.
Her granddaughter, Kayla Cochran, said doctors have given her six months to live.
“It’s definitely been very emotional trying times, but you know with the Lord and above, you know, he’s watched over us so far, and we’ve turned it all over to him and the doctors,” Cochran said.
Cochran said that Cooper remains a part of their lives and is “still truly an angel.”
“A year ago, if he hadn’t shown up, he wouldn’t be here with us,” she said.
Coble’s family said their main goal is to make her comfortable at home, because she wishes to be at home. Doctors say she needs 24-hour care.
“We’re just trying to keep her comfortable and keep her strong as we can and you know we’re just trying to stay positive at this point,” Cochran said.
Cooper is making plans to visit Coble again soon, as her family asks for prayers and support.
“Hopefully, she makes a safe recovery and we can find someone to help her on a day-to-day basis,” Cooper said.
A GoFundMe has been set up to cover Coble’s medical expenses. So far, $20 of the $5,500 goal has been raised.
